on a medical expedition

Bupa International has taken part in a mission to set up temporary health clinics in an area of Vietnam where medical services are in short supply.

Our medical director, Dr Sneh Khemka, was one of 20 volunteer doctors who visited villages in the north-western district of Mai Chau where infections and malnutrition are major concerns.

     

Last August, Bupa International's medical director, Dr Sneh Khemka, travelled to Vietnam to help set up temporary health clinics in the Mai Chau valley. This video diary takes you inside the clinics and shows you some of the health issues that the doctors had to tackle.

Dr Sneh's diary: 376 patients in a day

The doctors set up the first temporary health clinic in the village of Hang Kia, where the local Hamong people rarely have contact with healthcare professionals.

Tarpaulins, candlelights and giant flying bugs signify the warm night as I sit beside a Vietnamese homestay writing this. We’re in the Mai Chau valley, in north-western Vietnam, and have had our first day of treating the local people for various ailments.

Dr Sneh's diary: Bear essentials

As the expedition moves on to the next medical outpost, Dr Sneh is impressed with the work the group is achieving - and happy that he brought a supply of teddy bears for the local children.

The locals have told us that we have brought with us much excitement and anticipation. Being in a very secluded part of the hills (very limited vehicular access and poverty line living) means that medical attention has not been even seen by 60% of the population. It also means that we are lined up for a busy day.
