Expats stay put for Christmas

Wednesday 16 December: Only around 40% of expatriates are set to return home over the holiday period, according to a survey by Bupa International.

Around seven out of ten of the expats are not intending to move away from the country that they currently live in within the next 12 months, and more than half think the economic situation in their country of residence is better than their country of origin.

Dr Sneh Khemka, medical director of Bupa International said: “There is no doubt that the economic downturn is affecting expats all over the world. Our survey shows that 56 percent of them are cutting back on spending due to the credit crunch, which may be why so many of them aren’t planning to spend the holiday season with family and friends”.

Predictions about when the economic downturn will end in their country of residence vary. 67 percent of respondents say it will take up to two years, nine percent say it will be around two to three years and 13 percent don’t know.

“Even over the busy holiday period, it is important to make sure you have the appropriate health cover as things can get complicated, particularly if you are not familiar with the healthcare system in a foreign country. It can be very complex and vary enormously from one country to another,” he said.
