About the Vietnam expedition
Bupa International is taking part in a mission to set up temporary health clinics in an area of northern Vietnam where medicines and medical services are in short supply.
Our medical director, Dr Sneh Khemka, is one of 20 volunteer doctors who will trek into the Mai Chau district of north-western Vietnam to set up medical facilities in remote villages.
Many of the people living in tribal areas in the hills have never had access to a doctor but are in dire need of medical assistance. Infections are rife and malnutrition among children under five is estimated to be around 30%.
Another widespread problem for the local population is the infectious eye disease trachoma, which is the world’s leading cause of blindness and a big issue in Vietnam. Dr Sneh is a specialist eye surgeon, and thanks to the assistance of the Cromwell hospital in the UK, he will help provide much-needed antibiotics to treat this condition.
The project is organised in association with World Nomads and the Footprints network, which is an online philanthropy project set up in alliance with a host of e-commerce companies to make a difference in impoverished areas around the world.
You can read more about the expedition on the Footprints website, where you will also find information about how the mission is sponsored and who is taking part.
Throughout the mission, Dr Sneh will be posting his diary and video clips on Bupa International’s Project Vietnam page. You can also use our interactive map to see where the expedition is travelling to and read more about the villages and the region. You can find and follow Dr Sneh on our Twitter page where we would also love to hear your comments about the project.
