Hospital quality programme
Find out how we ensure Bupa International members can access high quality care.
We want our members to have the best possible experience when accessing hospital care. That is why we have designed a programme to assess the hospitals and clinics for our providers recognised by Bupa International worldwide.
The Hospital Quality Programme evaluates medical facilities based on a number of criteria, including patient safety, clinical services and staff management. The programme has been developed with the Joint Commission International, the world's largest international hospital accreditation organisation.
How we evaluate the hospitals
Initially, we ask hospitals to complete a self-assessment. This focuses on the services they have available, their attitude to quality and the standards of care. Some of the areas we focus on include: how hospitals monitor and improve the quality of care provided; their use of evidence-based, cost-effective medical practice; and their use of recognised safety protocols, for example the World Health Organisation Safe Surgery checklist.
The assessments are then reviewed by our medical experts at Bupa International. Some areas may require further validation or a discussion with the hospital, and in many cases we carry out on-site visits to help us understand how these attitudes and standards impact the patient experience. Once our team is confident they have everything they need, a feedback report is given to the hospital. We then work with the hospitals to define timelines and criteria for any improvements.
Which hospitals have been assessed?
Bupa International has more than 7,500 recognised providers around the world, including hospitals, clinics and doctors. Our medical team is focusing on the key facilities customers are accessing. So far, we have evaluated close to 400 hospitals through collaborations with our sister companies. We are working to ensure we provide customers with information they need about the facilities in their region.
Over the coming months we will start to publish more guides to the hospitals we have assessed. You can already see a map of the hospitals in Singapore which have been evaluated as part of the programme (under the tab 'Medical care' you will find a map showing the quality-assessed hospitals).
