A range of four preventive health checks are also included.
Essential
This level concentrates on hospital treatment. You have the guarantee that you'll be covered for:

- day-case treatment
What's covered?
The Lifeline plan covers you for the costs of active treatment. This means treatment of a disease, illness or injury that leads to your recovery, conservation of your condition, or to restore you to your previous state of health as quickly as possible. This includes both acute (diseases, illnesses or injuries that respond to medical care without the need for long term or prolonged treatment) and chronic (diseases, illnesses or injuries that are permanent, come back or are likely to continue indefinitely) conditions.
You are covered for:
- emergency and non-emergency treatment
- cancer treatment in full
- sports injuries
- psychiatric conditions (after two years' membership)
- drug treatments for HIV/AIDS up to £10,000 per year (after five years' membership)
From 1 April 2008 our Lifeline policy will also include the introduction of chronic cover and increased outpatients benefits.
Cover for maintaining chronic conditions
We have extended our cover for chronic conditions, so that we cover not only acute treatment received during flare ups of a chronic condition, but also maintenance of a chronic condition.
Increased outpatient benefits
Gold: the outpatient limit has been increased to full refund for pathology, x-ray and diagnostic tests. Other outpatient benefits including consultant fees for consultations, treatment by therapists and complementary medicine practitioners, consultant and psychologists fees for psychiatric treatment and costs for treatment by a family doctor are also paid in full.
Classic: the outpatient limit has been increased to £5,000 for consultant fees for consultations and pathology, x-ray and diagnostic tests. Other outpatient benefits including treatment by therapists and complementary medicine practitioners and consultant and psychologists fees for psychiatric treatment will also be paid in full.
For a full summary of your benefits, download your Lifeline membership guide.
What's not covered?
In order to keep your premiums down, there are certain conditions and circumstances that we do not cover. These include pre-existing conditions that you have when you join, routine dental cover, elective cosmetic surgery/treatment, war risks, health hydros/nature cure clinics. For full details please view the lifeline membership guide below.
Assistance cover
Evacuation
Ideal for those concerned about the quality of local medical care. When necessary, we'll provide emergency evacuation to the nearest centre of medical excellence, no matter where you are in the world.
Repatriation
Our highest level of assistance cover also gives you the choice of returning to your home country, to be treated in familiar surroundings, near your friends and relatives (if treatment is not available locally). If this happens, you can choose to have someone to accompany you for your visit back home.
How are our prices calculated?
We've developed a fair pricing structure that closely reflects your age and circumstances. Your monthly premiums will depend on your age and on your particular country of residence. Get a free quote online
We understand that many people do not need medical insurance cover for the USA. To make sure that you only pay for the cover you need, you can choose whether to include the USA in your Lifeline cover. Unfortunately, we cannot offer Bupa International Lifeline to anyone who is normally resident in the USA.
Deductibles (excess)
You can tailor the price you pay with a choice of five annual deductibles (excess). Choose to pay the first £100, £250, £500, £1,000 or £2,000 of your claims for the year; the higher the deductible, the lower your premium. Whichever option you choose, you can relax in the knowledge that you will pay an annual figure that suits you.
Cover in the USA
We have made special arrangements in the USA. For day-case, MRI,CT, PET scans, in-patient or cancer treatment in the USA you should pre-authorise your treatment. If you pre-authorise your treatment and choose to go outside the network then we can only reimburse up to 80 percent of your treatment costs. If you do not pre-authorise your treatment then we can only reimburse 50 percent of your treatment costs. Please let us know if you need treatment so that our team can confirm your cover. We cannot cover people who are normally resident in the USA.
